I Declare My Independence From Homework Essays - Education Reform

I Declare My Independence from Homework In class, October 22, 1997. The almost unanimous declaration of the two-thousand students of Glenbard West High School. We declare our independence from any homework; we will no longer tolerate its injustice. When in the course of scholastic events, it becomes necessary to discontinue certain ineffective practices that have limited the extra-curricular activities of the student bodies, we, the students are forced to speak out against these practices, and rebel for the greater good of humanity. I, therefore, have been chosen to convey to the faculty the reasons to discontinue the practice, and in doing so to justify the pending rebellion. Homework causes undue stress at an early age, leading to premature death of many students. It has limited the time that students have to work, participate in extra-curricular activities, and furthermore it creates a less friendly student- teacher relationship, thus causing inter-personal stress. Homework causes overall dislike of the school system by students. Uncompleted homework forces many students to miss undue amounts of school in order to finish impossible work-loads assigned by teachers. It forces students to do repetitive work, even if they already understand the subject matter. The concept of homework is so ingrained into the minds of teachers that they do not see that it is even bad from their prospective. Assigning homework means that a teacher must waste valuable class time going over it when they could be lecturing and teaching the subject matter just as effectively. In the cases of larger homework assignments, teachers waste their valuable time grading it. Homework adds to an already inordinate amount of time spent on education of young America. The facts of the matter are that many people who are home-schooled spend from one to two hours on school work a day and still often end up ahead of those in the public school system. With this fact in mind, shouldn't a seven-hour school day be long enough to do whatever learning we need to do? At all times during our school careers, we have protested civilly the injustice of homework. But the faculty and the state law-makers have never once listened to our pleas for no homework. We have had petitions, and we have presented arguments to teachers, but to no avail. Based on the above facts, we the students of Glenbard West High School are forced to rebel against the very concept of homework, unless you, the faculty, put into action a change of policy regarding homework immediately. We will as of the signing of this document no longer complete assigned school- work at any non-class time.

Karl Marx Essay

Karl Marx Essay I. General OverviewKarl Marx and Friedrich Engels strove to put into practical effect the humanitarian concept of Feuerbach. In so doing, they founded a new economic movement called Socialism. According to Marx, the supreme end of man is an immanent and material one, and consists in happiness. This material happiness must be obtained through organized collectivism. In fact, according to Marx, reality is governed by economic needs (historical materialism). Economic reality develops according to Hegel's dialectical principles; that is, reality must deny itself in order to reach a higher degree of being. In application, this principle means that the present organization of society must be destroyed (even through violent revolution, if necessary, because only through such destruction can a better political, economic, and social organization be achieved. To establish this new format of society, working men (the proletariat) must be organized and take up the struggle against the capitalists who defraud them.Karl Marx (1818-1883)Thus the actors in this drama are the social classes the proletariat is arrayed against capitalism. This struggle, according to Marx and Engels, will end in victory for the proletariat, that is, in the triumph of universal Socialism.II. Life and WorksKarl Marx (picture) was born on May 5, 1818 and died on March 14, 1883. He was a German economist, philosopher, and revolutionist whose writings form the basis of the body of ideas known as Marxism. With the aid of Friedrich Engels (picture) he produced much of the theory of modern socialism and communism. Marx's father, Heinrich, was a Jewish lawyer who had converted his family to Christianity partly in order to preserve his job in the Prussian state. Karl himself was baptized in the Evangelical church. As a student at the University of Berlin, young Marx was strongly influenced by the philosophy of...

Global Businese - Payless Shoe Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Global Businese - Payless Shoe - Essay Example According to the report findings there have been notable changes currently being witnessed in the global economy that has seen the world stock markets slumping and other changes taking place in the banking sector and the industry as a whole. All these changes have effects on the operations of especially global businesses and this study would focus on Payless Shoe with reference to the changes taking place in the global economy. As the research stresses basically global businesses operate in different regions as well as nations and these are in most cases well established business entities that often dominate the global markets. These global businesses often compete in a global market where different economies are brought in close contact. Given this scenario, it can be noted that all global businesses are operating within the same sphere hence any change that takes place in the global economy basically affects all of them. Payless specializes in retailing designer footwear and somehow, this particular industry is also affected in one way or the other by the global changes in the world economy. The fact that the global economy is going down translates into mean that business also is negatively affected and Payless shoe cannot be spared the burden as well. Obviously sales would also decline in response to the tightening global economy. Consumers would have little to spend hence little revenue generated by bus iness.

Organisational Effectiveness at Google and P&G Essay

Organisational Effectiveness at Google and P&G - Essay Example Employee swapping produces risks of reduced morale and poor alignment of cultures. Nonetheless, this case showed that Google and P&G can learn from one another’s cultural values and practices, so that they can both enhance their organisational effectiveness. Table of Contents Executive Summary 1 Table of Contents 2 Introduction 3 Competing Values Model 4 Overview 4 Applications 4 Employee Swapping 5 P&G and Google’s Employee Swapping 5 Conclusion 7 Reference List 8 Introduction The construct of organisational effectiveness is an important concept in organisational studies because organisations commonly aspire to improve or attain organisational effectiveness. Organisational effectiveness, however, is hard to measure because it does not possess a universally-agreed definition. As a result, several scholars criticised its significance to organisations, such as Steers (1975) and Hannan and Freeman (1977). Quinn and Rohrbaugh (1983) offer a model of effectiveness criteria i n â€Å"A Spatial Model of Effectiveness Criteria: Towards a Competing Values Approach to Organizational Analysis.† They conducted a two-part exploratory investigation on how individual theorists and researchers conceive the construct of organisational effectiveness. The first study included seven experts, while the second used 45 theorists and scholars. Findings showed that organisational effectiveness can be constructed using three axes of values: control-flexibility, internal-external, and means-ends. These values pertained to the critical issues of â€Å"competing values† in defining and measuring effectiveness, which has been embodied in the competing values framework (CVF) (Quinn and Rohrbaugh 1983, p.370). This paper applies the Competing Values Approach to Google and Procter & Gamble (P&G), as well as employee swapping. Competing Values Model Overview The Competing Values Approach is composed of three competing values, and they are control-flexibility, internal -external, and means-ends. These values offer four mid-range theories of organisational analysis: open systems model, human relations model, internal process model, and rational goal model (Quinn and Rohrbaugh 1983, p.369). The human relations model highlights on flexibility and internal focus. The open systems model concentrates on flexibility and external focus. The rational goal model prioritises control and external focus, while the internal process model emphasises stability and control (Quinn and Rohrbaugh 1983, p.371). Applications Procter & Gamble. P&G is described as having an internal process model with hierarchical and market attributes. It uses information management and communication to attain the ends of stability and control (Quinn and Rohrbaugh 1983, p.371). In terms of culture, it possesses a mixture of market and hierarchical cultures. It has a market culture because employees behave according to clear objectives and are rewarded through their achievements (Hartnel l, Ou and Kinicki 2011, p.679). The company’s main values are communication, competition, and achievement. P&G is effective in gathering customer and competitor information and developing the competitiveness of its products (Robbins, Judge and Campbell 2010, p.480). P&G is also hierarchical because of rules and regulations that clearly define roles and responsibilities. Behaviours are characterised with conformity and predictability, which it wants to change by swapping employees with Google (Robbins,

Common Assignment - Individual Leadership Growth Reflection - Essay Example This type of awareness is important to leader’s self management ability. Transformational leadership As a transformational leader, I must be socially competent in the ways that I carry out myself before others. The display of understanding, empathy and emotions of others, and being concerned with their welfare is core to managing individual’s relationships. In my occupancy as an elementary and middle school principal, many experiences have played a major role in shaping and developing my leadership skills. My reflections on these challenges may also be helpful in program design. In one of my experiences as the leader of the middle school, I was given the task of shutting down an existing elementary school, supervising renovations to the infrastructure and organizing a new middle school which was also being put up as a technology project site for the region. An advisory committee was prepared to lead in development of the project with members from various communities and organizations within the province. My experiences during the five years of active participation with this project prompted me to re-asses discernments of the role of the principal, the effectiveness required of educational leaders and the nature of competent staff development. The aspects of this transformational leadership experience which positively affected my professional growth included: our recurrently sch eduled advisory committee meeting with different stakeholders which boosted the transformational process that we tried to transfer to the school’s daily operation; being part of action research concerning our project which was led by professor from Regina University; being an active participant in mentoring relationship with both the

Pride And Prejudice And The Romantic Ages English Literature Essay

Pride And Prejudice And The Romantic Ages English Literature Essay Despite its name, Romantic, the Romantic age had only a few things that was related to the real meaning of romance known now, however, love had been the main subject of most of the ages art. The age was actually a great achievement of art and philosophy that resulted in the western societies to change the way they thought about themselves and their surroundings as mentioned in the article Romanticism Adapted from  A Guide to the Study of Literature. Differing from the classical age the romantic age has given artists of that period more freedom and creation. Music for instance was of great value in terms of the way it expresses. Composers of the age used music along with freedom in expression to express nationalism and hence proving their cultural identity also as mentioned in the article Romantic Literature. And as mentioned in the article The Romantic Era it is stated that composers experimented length of compositions, new harmonies, and tonal relationships.   Furthermore, all s trict ideas in the structure of the society were breaking down. The romantic aged has marked a great power of more artistic energy and creativity. Romanticism is featured by many characteristics that influenced art and literature of that age. Starting with love of nature in which the romantics valued the beauty of nature because if the industrial revolution that has happened during that age forcing people to live in cities and loosing the peaceful country side livings. Romantics also valued nature because they believed it helped in realizing the real identity of ones self as mentioned in the article Romantic Literature. A clear romantic feature also appeared in the difference between rationality and emotions. The romantic age writers trusted their emotions in composing and writing unlike the classical ages. Romanticism created trust in human emotions and feelings and has reflected in the creativity of art. Romanticism also showed the belief in artists as the creators of the art. Unlike older ages where an artist was bond to reflect the surroundings in his art, Romanticism gave artists of its age the ability to express their inner feelings and emotions in their work. In older ages, literature and art were for high educated people of certain classes only but Romanticism gave chances for more common the ability to compose and create art under the concept of Nationalism. Exoticism has also reflected along with other features as people became fonder of exotic ideas and the idea of mystery. According to the article Romantic Literature supernatural ideas were also an approach that showed on artists work as they became more attracted to ideas of horror and mystery. Romantic age creativity also ga ve chances to normal people to be heros of an art unlike older classics where a hero is a noble man of high value. Most novels in the romantic age were written by females. One of the most important artists that appeared was the great Jane Austen an English novelist of romance based fiction. One of Jane Austens great writings was the novel Pride and Prejudice. The novel was based on the idea of marriage and how it was affected by the society. austen.jpg She believed that marriage should not be affected by the way people think or family issues and wealth and that it should be based more on ones need and feelings. She tried to convince readers that one should be married for the sake of love. Jane Austen showed how different ideas of her ages society affected the idea of marriage. Different classes of society during that age had certain ways of thinking when the idea of marriage from another class appears. Such ideas included the differences in reputation, pride, identity and family wealth. pride_and_prejudice-movie-picture.jpg In the novel the middle class family, The Bennets get to socialize with the higher class family the Bingleys and the Darcys but the idea that they are lower than them keeps on appearing in the way the novel events go by. Mrs. Bennets hope was to get her five daughters married to men whose class will provide good financial aid to her daughters as at that time a womans only way to possess good financials was getting married to good fortunes as mentioned in the article Marriage in Pride and Prejudice. The first sentence in the novel appears to provide a clear thought of the idea of classes. It stated that, It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. This also shows the opposite, that even a woman is in need of a wealthy man with good fortune. It is stated in the article Pride and Prejudice Marriage that marriage for a woman in the authors age is a status for her strive and achieve. Jane Austen reflects that the idea of prejudice between Darcy and Elizabeth when they first met and shows how love can break the boundary of class differences and pride. A major idea that was shown in Janes novel was the idea behind how certain physical appearances really hid how a persons real character is. It is clearly shown in the way Elizabeth was misguided with Mr. Darcys and Mr. Wickhams appearance on how their internal character really is as mentioned in the article Pride and Prejudice: Appearance vs. Reality. By the time most of the novels events are over Elizabeth comes to a decision that her primary impact on both Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham were incorrect. Jane Austen clearly concludes on her novel that appearance often tricks how people judge ones real character. The idea of hypocrisy appears several times in the novel mostly in positions where one of the novels characters has a sarcastic view on some point where he/she neglects that it might be in him/her self. For instance hypocrisy appears when the Bingleys make fun of the Gardners and the Lucas that they have gained their fortunes through trade which reflects low identity when they actually ignore the fact that their fortune has even been gained through trade. Caroline from the Bingleys, is also an example of hypocrisy where she supports her friend Elizabeth as long as it would not harm her plans and then at the closest stop gives her away with a low value letter intentionally. Finally, Pride and Prejudice, is a subject of how marriage acts in a demanding society, a society that demands pride, dignity, wealth and well-being. The novel clearly illustrates the writers feelings of how marriage should not be in the control of society pressures, wealth and appearances but for the sake of ones love. The novel also clearly shows how women had prejudice towards their low class when getting indulged with families of higher class levels. Pride and Prejudice shows not only the idea of love in marriage but represents all kind of relationships and how that the perfect couple with the perfect circumstances and reasons was hard to be found. The writer illustrates this by showing all kinds of thoughts that appear in marriages according to her view of her ages society. Works Cited Page Romanticism. 15 Feb. 2009. 10 May 2010. Control Leads to Destruction in Ken Keseys One Flew Over the Cuckoos

Control Leads to Destruction in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey, is about patients and doctors in a mental institution.   The author talks a lot about what goes on in this institute.   The main points in this book deal with control, be it the character of McMurphy who is unable to handle control, or Nurse Ratched the head nurse on the ward whose job requires her to be in control. The world of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is dark; it is a place where control leads to destruction, but the novel shows through the character of The Chief that there is still hope if the people who are being controlled have the power to resist.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Nurse Ratched is a mean woman whose job revolves around control. She depends on people who are less fortunate than her to make a living. Her need to control others is an unfortunate trait that she has because it makes people unable to think for themselves and it also leads to destruction.   One example of this is when Nurse Ratched caught one of the patients (Billy Bibbit) with a woman.   The nurse feeling the need to control Billy threatened to tell his mother.   Billy begged Nurse Ratched not to tell her but when his requests were refused Billy slashed his neck with a broken bottle and killed himself.   Billy's life was destroyed because of Nurse Ratched's need to control others.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another place that we see the dark world is when we examine the relationship between Nurse Ratched and R.P. McMurphy.  McMurphy is a happy and rebellious man.   He is not used to being controlled, so when he gets into the institution he refuses to be controlled by Nurse Ratche... ... at".   At the end of the novel when McMurphy is given a lobotomy, Chief realizes that he is not so safe.   Chief escapes from the institution and runs away to Canada.   Chief is a figure of hope in the novel he shows us that there is still a way out for those who are being controlled.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest shows us darkness, and it shows us a world where control leads to destruction.   It shows us lives destroyed, people who are so obsessed with control that they do not think of others even if their job requires them to do so.   However, it shows us hope.   Hope for those who are being controlled, hope for those who just can't take the harsh strict rules that are imposed upon them.   The world of One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest is like a dark grey cloud, a dark grey cloud with a silver lining.

Compare and contrast Donne’s “A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning” Essay

Donne’s â€Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning† and Marvell’s â€Å"To His Coy Mistress† are identical and contradictory in many respects. Although â€Å"A Valediction† concentrates on the comfort of love on parting and â€Å"To His Coy Mistress† contemplates about sexual love and the briefness of life, both exemplify characteristics of metaphysical poetry. Metaphysical poetry is about the profound areas of experience, especially about love, romantic and sensual, and, to a lesser extent, about pleasure, learning, and art. Metaphysical poems are brief but intense meditations, characterized by a striking use of wit, irony and wordplay. Beneath this somewhat formal structure is the underlying arrangement of the poem’s argument. In â€Å"To His Coy Mistress† the explicit argument (Marvell’s request that the coy lady yield to his passion) is a background for the more serious argument about the need for pleasure and to live life to the fullest before death. The outward lightness conceals a deep seriousness of intent. This poem finds the pretence of passion used to hang serious reflections on the brevity of happiness, or in other words, the main point of a carpe diem poem. In â€Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning† the argument is not logically persuasive as Marvell’s poem proved, but the cleverness and subtlety of Donne’s method are diverting in that a lonely woman might be comforted. She cannot change the fact of the lover leaving, but the poem states evidence of the integrity of the love he has professed thus far. The imagery used by the poets can also be applied as a basis for comparing and contrasting. Donne writes in a wide-ranging and obscure method. He did not write for publication, but showed poems to friends whom he supposed to be well read enough to understand these references. Donne’s imagery draws on the new learning of the English renaissance and on topical discoveries and exploration. For example, line 11’s â€Å"But trepidation of the spheres† is a reference to the spheres of cosmology during the era. With Marvell, imagery is more difficult. Unlike Donne who scatters metaphors freely, Marvell is more selective and sparing. Very often the image is more memorable and striking than the idea it expresses, as with the â€Å"deserts of vast eternity†, while frequently one finds an idea which cannot be understood except as the image in which Marvell expresses it, as with the â€Å"amorous birds of prey,  rather at once our time devour†. In any case, similarly with these two poets, the use of the metaphor remains subordinate to the metaphysical argument. Both poets, though they occasionally display their higher learning, write with fairly colloquial voices. However, Marvell exhibits more variety in the voice. The second person is found in â€Å"To His Coy Mistress†. When Donne does this, it is assumed that an intimate address to a real woman is intended. But Marvell’s â€Å"Coy Mistress† is obviously absent, a mere excuse for Marvell to examine his real carpe diem subjects, time and the shortness of human happiness. The structure and punctuation in each poem also reveal key differences. The same eight-syllable iambic line is continuously found in â€Å"To His Coy Mistress†. The vigorousness of the argument appears in the breathless lines. Few are end-stopped, and the lines have the rough power of speech. Donne, on the other hand, carries his argument using four line stanzas in â€Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning†. Unlike Donne, who is prepared to allow some lack of punctuation (between first and second stanzas and frequently within all the stanzas), Marvell’s stanza here has a near metronomic quality. A punctuation mark at the end of the second line exaggerates the rhyming syllable, which is matched at the end of the stanza. Although discussing different subjects, both poems are examples of metaphysical poetry. Through their different images and styles of writing, Marvell was able to illustrate the carpe diem theme of the shortness of life and living it to the fullest, while Donne expressed the consolation of love on leaving. The authors are able to transmit their messages to the reader through these difference and similarities, serving their literary purpose.

Work Essay

Work Essay Work Essay English Essay Atticus Finch "To Kill a Mocking Bird" was set back in the mid 1900's, racism was high and discrimination of the black was still running. The text "To Kill a Mockingbird", Atticus challenges the case of Tom Robinson for rape and abuse of Mayella Ewell, showing the protection of the of Tom Robinson skin colour and showing the defence of African American People . Atticus Finch is a man with strong values and who does the right thing. This is shown when he defends Tom Robinson despite the social stigma of representing a black man. He teaches Scout and Jem to be accepting of others, and refuse to fight back against Bob Ewell. Tom Robinson was falsely accused of rape & abuse of Mayella Ewell and her father Bob. Atticus is one of the few people in the town who is willing to defend Tom Robinsons case, but there are also others that is on his side. Atticus show a trusting attitude, which he is the most courageous character I know, because of his defence of Tom Robinson. Everything Atticus is doing for Tom Robinson is a step to change the life of the Maycombs town and toward the African American people, not by the charge of skin colour but also fair and equal rights to the community, and give same respect. Atticus is a character who display various form of courage, also show most courageous attitude out of all character. He refuse to give up the fight no matter what circumstances or losses will do to his life (himself) or his family. Atticus show a lot of courage and behaviour in many instances throughout the story, not by fighting or killing, but by standing up and believe d in a civilized way. He wants to b e a good example for his kids and instil in them a strong sense of moral values. Atticus Finch knew that he was not going to win and he WILL lose this case. No matter how much evidence that he had, the jury will still charge him because of his skin colour, but it did not mean that it will stop him from giving Tom the strongest defence he possibly can. Importantly, Atticus doesn't put so much effort into Tom's case because he's an African American, but because of his innocence. Atticus feels that the justice system is colour blind, and he defends Tom as an innocence man but not a man of colour. As a lawyer, Atticus is again an ideal character as fair and equal and is the best man at his job. The whole fact that he took Tom Robinson’s case and listened to his conscience, when he knew he would lose, showed what sort of character Harper Lee wanted Atticus to be. He knew that the justice system at that time was prejudiced and immoral and that it was certain that Tom Robinson would be found guilty. Atticus remains calm when provoked directly. For example, looking at how he handles Bob Ewell's challenge: â€Å"Too proud to fight?† â€Å"No,† says Atticus, â€Å"too old†. This suggests that it may seem to us at first thought that Atticus is no longer strong and fit enough to fight; but also it might mean that fighting is not something that adults should do, which implies that Bob has not grown up. As a father, Atticus is truthful, fair and loyal his children, Scout and Jem. He acts as both a father and a teacher to them, educating them in the social and moral expectations of their society. He treats them with respect and wants them to understand why things happen in the community, what is wrong with society and how to try and change them and improve themselves at the same time. Atticus didn’t believe in spoiling his children or shouting at them but instead he believed respect for each other. Honesty and self respect

Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Amendment Rights Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Amendment Rights - Essay Example The issue the case was whether the Fourth Amendment of U.S. constitution grants protection to individuals against unreasonable searches & seizures thus requiring police obtaining a search warrant to allow them to wiretap a public phone booth (Katz v. United States, 1967). The Miranda v Arizona (1966) is a landmark case that represents the aspect of the criminal procedures and the due processes. The defendant in the case, Miranda was arrested by police at his home and taken to a police station where the accuser identified him before later being interrogated by police for a whole two hour period resulting to him signing a written confession. Further, during his trial the written and oral confessions were provided to the jury and as result the court found the defendant guilty of rape and kidnapping hence sentenced him to a 20-30 years period imprisonment on each case account. However, Miranda appealed in the court of supreme of Arizona but the court ruled that the defendant’s constitutional rights were not infringed upon in securing his confessions (Miranda v. Arizona, 1966). The court of supreme of the United States merged four different cases with admissibility issues concerning the evidence obtained during police questionings. In the first, which involved Mr. Miranda, the defendant had been interrogated by police for two hours for charges of kidnapping and rape and although he was a migrant, the police officers failed notifying him of his rights hence resulting to him signing written confession. Moreover, the signed confessions contained a clause that, stated that the accused was aware of his rights during the interrogation as provided in the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Therefore, in summary the issue was, whether police officers are mandated notifying the accused person in their custody of his/her rights as provided for by the Fifth Amendment
